Dr. Earl Baker, a Knight at the St. Thom-
as the Apostle Catholic Church, loved
his wife a great deal. She was commit-
ted to the Pro-Life cause and served
as the Secretary of Arizona Right to
Life for many years. When she passed
away, Dr. Baker could think of no better
way to honor his wife’s memory than
to create an educational project that
communicated the sanctity
of human
life to chil-
dren
and
teens. Thus
was born the
idea to place
medical fetal
models and
fetal develop-
ment posters
on permanent
loan to Pub-
lic and Private
schools. Funding
was secured by
presentat ions
to local Knights of Columbus groups
and other donors in honor of Mrs. Bak-
er and the project. Harmony Ierley, the
Directorof Educationfor theLifeEduca-
tion Corporation, the educational arm
of Arizona Right to Life, began to call
science teachers at local high schools
and offer them free fetal development
teaching aides. Harmony explained
that the sets would be on permanent
loan for as long as the school could
use them. If they found they didn’t
need them anymore they could be re-
turned to be given to another school.
The schools, who had no financial re-
sources for such hands-on educational
tools, were thrilled at the opportunity.
In some cases the science teachers
got approval from their administrators
and in other cases they accepted them
on their own for their
classroom use. Each
fetal model set was
protected in a clear
acrylic case that was
custom ordered
from a local
acrylics com-
pany. It
inc luded
a closing
back door
with a lock so that
the teacher could access the
models and then keep them safely dis-
played when not in use. Close to two
dozen schools including many of the
Catholic schools in the area gratefully
received these resources. Students
were able to see with their own eyes
what a wonder the developing child
really is. Seeds were planted and eyes
were gently opened to the truth of the
humanity of the unborn.
