Don Lederhos, past Grand Knight and member of St. Patrick’s Council 11745 in Anchorage, uses the
Precious Feet as his way of spreading the Pro-Life message. “On January 22nd, 1973 Roe vs. Wade was
decided and I knew I had to get involved”, said Don. At that time he was a seminarian and he found
himself in the unlikely position of counseling more than one pregnant young woman to not have an
abortion.
Don left the seminary, married and was caught up
in the business of family and work. He had a good
friend who, as he says, “wouldn’t leave me alone
about joining the Knights. In 1997 I finally joined“,
says Don. “It was the best thing that ever happened
to me spiritually. It made me re-prioritize my life. I
began to seek what God wanted of my life - not what
I wanted. That’s when the Precious Feet became a
part of my life.”
He continued enthusiastically, “Of course I always wear them. But I always carry extras with me. On a
trip, the flight attendant commented on them and I took a pair out of my pocket and showed her the
little brochure they come with. She was enthralled and excitedly took the pin. She then brought the
three other attendants back and they asked if they could have one. I gave them one and then gave
each of them an extra, saying, “Here is one to wear and one to share.”
That was 34,000 Precious Feet
ago
and I am still going strong. I have sent 8,000 Precious Feet to Russia with Fr. Mike Shields. He holds
retreats for women who have had abortions. Some women have had up to seven abortions. One
time I drove by an abortion clinic and I decided to stop. I took the brochure, which beautifully shows
a developing pre-born baby, and taped it on the front door. I was sure it would be taken down imme-
diately. Amazingly, as I drove by each day, it was still up there. It stayed up for seven days. A few years
later, I went inside that clinic and, of course, I had Precious Feet in my pocket. I opened magazines and
put the feet between pages, tucked them in corners and even pinned one on a teddy bear that was on
the counter in the front office.
You might think that this is his “job”but he doesn’t have an official Pro-Life position in the Knights. Don
says, “I think I am trying to do what every Knight should do. I give them away always. I have given
enough Precious Feet to the church parishes for all of the youth groups in the states.” Don continues,
“This is an ideal project for Knights - stock them in the gathering area of the church, give them out
at Pre-Cana classes, marriage encounters, youth groups, at every event that any Knight ever has.”
Don’s fellow Knights are wearing them and giving them away. It is a challenge to all the Knights to
keep this issue in front of people and one of the best ways is through the
Precious Feet!
It is not surprising that Don Lederhos is one of 60 Knights featured in the
book, ‘
By Their Works’
. “I do not feel that anything that I have done as a
Knight is extraordinary. I feel that many Knights do much much more but are
just not recognized. It is my hearts desire that at the end of each day every
Knight can say that he has done everything he can to promote the culture of
Life.”
